How to Make Coffee

Here's my quick guide to how I extract some enjoyment from brewing coffee with an aeropress.

This process should be tweaked as you see fit. Your beans, water, grinder, altitude, karma, etc. will affect the outcome but the best you can hope for is to control whatever parameters you can and enjoy the mechanistic yet ultimately chaotic nature of the process.

This makes 2 cups to dilute and share.

  1. Preheat your mug with some hot water; this will keep your final brew warmer longer and keep temperatures consistent.
  2. Measure out and grind your beans. For two cups I aim for 15 grams of beans at a courseness a fair bit finer than a french press but not venturing into espresso range. With pre-ground I'll heap 3 teaspoons and throw measurement to the wind.
  3. Flip the aeropress over and pull the plunger out to line up with the 4. Add the coffee and 200 grams of water if you're measuring or up to the top if you're not.
  4. Stir vigorously for 5-6 seconds add the lid with a paper filter and then let brew for 5-6 minutes. I will usually flip it over onto a mug about half way through so the coffee has time to settle before plunging.
  5. When time is up press slowly and firmly to procure the goodness. Stop when you hear the wheezing noises.
  6. Enjoy.
